Chance of Rain Bonus Block
Did you know the Chance of Rain quilt pattern comes with a bonus Rain Cloud block? Today I’m sharing how I added it to my own quilt and how you can, too!

The Chance of Rain quilt pattern is available HERE! Use the code RAINY20 to save 20% through July 25, 2025. I’m also donating 10% of pattern sales during launch week to the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund to help families affected by recent flooding.

In my baby Chance of Rain quilt, I swapped out the Umbrella blocks in the second colorway for the Rain Cloud blocks. To do this, I:
- Skipped cutting the A and B pieces from Color 2.
- Cut fewer Color 4 pieces: Since I replaced four Umbrella blocks, I cut four fewer D, E, and F pieces than the pattern calls for. (For example, I cut 9 D pieces instead of 13.)
- Skipped cutting all of the G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, and O pieces from Color 6.

The cutting instructions for the Rain Cloud block are for one block. If you want to add four Rain Cloud blocks to your quilt, like I did, simply multiply the number of pieces listed by the number of blocks you’re making. For example, since a single block needs (2) G7 pieces, you’ll multiply that by 4, which means you’ll need (8) G7 pieces in total.
The same approach applies if you’re making the large throw or twin size from the pattern!

Wondering which Kona solids I used in my baby quilt? I stuck with the same colors as the pattern cover, except I swapped out Ice Peach for Lingerie as the background of my Rain Cloud blocks. I still used Ice Peach for the centers of the flowers. I found that Ice Peach was a bit too dark for the Rain Cloud block backgrounds, which made the quilt look less gingham-y.

I hope you found today’s post helpful! I’ll update this post with photos of the finished quilt as soon as it’s done. If you have any questions about anything I covered today, feel free to email me at info@penandpaperpatterns.com—I’m happy to help!
UPDATE! I finished my baby size Chance of Rain quilt!

It was quilted by Julie Hirt using the Baptist Clams panto. I chose the Baptist Clams panto because it reminds me of rainbows. Fitting for this quilt, I think!

The binding is Kona in Candy Blue and, unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the backing. I picked it up at Main Street Fabric Company in Florence and spaced hanging on to the selvage. I do love the floral motif and how well it matches with the blue in the front of the quilt!

And here is a full shot of it! And, good news, the quilt is available for purchase HERE!

I absolutely love this pattern, plus the swap outs! So ingenious! I was thinking about a quilt with umbrellas and clouds. Thanks for creating it!
