Hello Dolls Quilt

Hello Dolls Quilt

Today I'm sharing my recently finished Hello Dolls quilt top!

Before releasing Nesting Dolls, I had plans to make a version in prints following the expansion pattern. I was going to keep it simple and follow the pattern exactly as written, but the creative possibilities with the negative space in that version of the pattern were too tempting.

Originally, I was going to fill the negative space with a mix of classic quilt blocks (i.e. Bear Paw, Churn Dash, Sawtooth Star, etc.), but I wasn't really loving how it was turning out. I thought maybe I could incorporate one of my own block designs in the quilt instead and, after digging through the options, I ultimately went with the flower block from the Hello Spring pattern. This is how it turned out!

The Hello Dolls quilt (54 3/4" x 72 1/2") combines the Nesting Dolls patterns (both the quilt and expansion patterns) and the flower block from the Hello Spring pattern. Save 20% on all three patterns until 11/20/26 with the code HELLODOLLS20.

I made the quilt in Cloud 9's Folky Forest collection by Soph Rowe. I purchased a 1/2 yard bundle of the collection and that ended up being more than enough for the quilt top. There were 1 or 2 prints that I used almost all of the 1/2 yard of, but that was mainly due to mistakes made while cutting out pieces for the quilt.

I also bought 4 yards of the background print (Bunches of Gold from Folky Forest) and that was also more than enough for the quilt. I ended up having a little more than half a yard of the print leftover.

The Kona solids I used for the quilt are Wheat (Doll A), Ice Peach (Doll B), Roasted Pecan (Doll C), Otter (Eyes), and Peach (Cheek Color). A fat 1/8 of each of those solids was enough for the quilt too!

To stay organized while making this quilt, I printed and hung up the four block diagrams from the patterns as well as the mock up on my design wall in front of my cutting table. I would grab one of the fabrics from the Folky Forest collection and then cut out the pieces from biggest to smallest that were used in the mock up. I marked off the pieces I cut out on the block diagrams as I went too. Using the tags in the pattern were super helpful in staying organized as well!

I made a quilt top diagram that lists the sizes of the sashing and border pieces you'll need to make this quilt You can download the diagram HERE.

My Hello Dolls quilt is currently on its way to Julie Hirt! I plan to have it quilted in her Mini City of Fountains panto using a light peach thread. I will update this blog post when I have photos of it quilted and bound!
